When you look at someone who has great teeth, it’s easy to assume they really lucked out by having uniform sized teeth that are in alignment and generally the same color.
It could be good genes. Or they could have porcelain veneers.
Really, no matter how good they look to another person, just about everyone has some flaws with their teeth. People will have teeth of varying sizes, there may be chips or gaps, and some teeth may have been stained by tetracycline or trauma.
Fixing all of these issues with orthodontics, crowns, whitening, and other alternatives can be very expensive and time consuming.
Or, you could just cover up the problems, but in a good way. Porcelain veneers are that cover-up. We place beautiful porcelain veneers at Gentle Dental.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are exactly as their name implies — veneers. Like a teak wood veneer tabletop that covers lesser wood used to build the piece, porcelain veneers cover up underlying dental problems. Porcelain veneers are thin porcelain overlays that are bonded onto the fronts of your teeth effectively covering up any flaws and presenting a perfect smile to the world.
In the process of considering veneers, our Gentle Dental dentists will examine your teeth to ensure they are healthy and aren’t in need of any treatments. Any issues such as decay or gum disease need to be addressed before you can begin the veneer process. Veneers are a cosmetic procedure, not a restorative one.
The first step in the veneer process is to take ½ millimeter of tooth enamel off the front of each tooth that will receive a veneer. The reason for this is to make room for the veneer to sit on the tooth front without making the tooth larger than it was originally. After the enamel is removed, we take impressions and photos of your teeth. These provide the blueprints for the dental lab to create your custom-made veneers, which usually takes about a week. While your veneers are being fabricated, we apply temporary veneers to cover your exposed teeth.
When your completed veneers have been delivered to Edison offices, you come in for your second appointment. We check the fit and color match of your veneers with your adjacent teeth. Once satisfied, we clean and polish your teeth. We then cement the veneers onto your teeth, remove any stray cement, and shave off any protruding areas. You’re done and you can now show the world your beautiful smile! Now you can be the person everyone assumes was lucky to be born with perfect teeth.
